WSD is a non-profit trust dedicated to helping street dogs. The trust was set up in 1985 and is registered as a charitable trust under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950

WSD are recognised by the Animal Welfare Board of India (Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India)

Since 1989 WSD have been carrying out a mass sterilisation programme for street dogs, following the recommendations of the World Health Organisation on rabies eradication and dog population control. WSD also conduct an on-site first aid and vaccination programme, education and awareness programme and put up abandoned pets and pariahs fora doption.
